What inspired you to become a foster carer?
After taking on my grandchild as a kinship carer, I was inspired to become a foster carer and thought it would be rewarding for all concerned.
As a single foster carer, what do you find to be the most rewarding part of fostering?
Sorry, I can’t say it’s any different than as a couple; you still have ups and downs, as all families do, but you still have the rewards as you do as a couple or a larger family.
Fostering can be demanding—how do you cope with the challenges of balancing it with your personal life?
Fostering can be demanding, but it’s no different than the demands of bringing up your own family, which is how I personally see the job as a Foster carer. You do have good and not so good times, but that’s life.
What advice would you give to other single individuals considering fostering but who might have concerns about doing it alone?
I would simply say DO IT.
What role do friends, family, and the wider community play in your fostering experience?
My family are always around to lend a hand if needed, just as I am when they need help; it’s what families are supposed to do.
What would you say to someone who is considering fostering, but might be unsure about doing it as a single carer?
Single Foster Carers, go for it. You can make a big difference to a child’s life; hopefully, it’s also rewarding for you. Whether the child stays with you forever, for a short time, goes home or goes to adoption, it’s you who has helped with that, and I must say it’s a lovely feeling to have.
